Insights from DASL

Data -- what can it do for you? How can it provide avenues to insight and guidance for the future? Our connection at ATLIS with the DASL data from NAIS can provide valuable information for technology leaders who know how to harness it. In this post, Sarah Hanawald, Executive Director of ATLIS, reflects on the importance of data collection as a resource for deeper analysis. We urge our members to set aside the time to complete their DASL data collection this fall so that you can have it at your fingertips when questions arise throughout the year. It’s that time of year again! With fall comes changing leaves (or not, depending on your geography) pumpkins, and a renewed commitment to data collection.  Yes, it’s time to pull up to the computer, grab a mug of coffee (a pumpkin spice latte?), and think about data.  

ATLIS has partnered with NAIS to collect information from our members that can help you make more effective technology decisions. The ATLIS data can be aligned with NAIS school data in DASL to allow our members to dig into information useful for planning. Incorporated in the survey is the ATLIS Supplement for all ATLIS member schools.  Our supplement focuses on the information our members have described as most critical to their success as technology leaders.

By supplying your school’s information, you contribute to the ATLIS annual report to members. You also gain the ability to generate custom reports on topics of importance to your school. ATLIS and DASL provide a dashboard with over 20 pre-built queries for the most commonly asked questions, including data on LMS and SIS usage, financial aid, BYOD, staff structure, and more. All of these queries can be modified and benchmarked to any NAIS data points you select. Members can write their own queries as well. Insights and questions gleaned from last year’s results helped us determine which professional development workshops, webinars, and white papers were most needed by our community. For example, we found that just 31% of schools applied for ERate funds, and, of those that did, over half utilized the help of a consultant. So we published a white paper encouraging our members to take another look at ERate and held a webinar that discussed the advantages and challenges of working with an ERate consultant.

Here are some other insights gleaned from last year’s data:

On Equity: Schools with BYOD programs were less likely than schools with other 1:1 programs to provide financial aid for student devices.

On Staffing: 88% of ATLIS member schools have one or more dedicated technology integrationists to focus on supporting teachers in embedding technology into the curriculum.

On Strategy: 70% of ATLIS member schools have combined their IT and EdTech departments into a unified department with all staff reporting to a single director.
