ATLIS Virtual Town Hall, November 10, 2021

The Association of Technology Leaders in Independent Schools (ATLIS) hosted its monthly Virtual Town Hall on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at 3:00 pm Eastern. The group who gathered discussed their successes and challenges as they near the midpoint of the school year and navigate “new normal”.

Participants discussed the challenges that arise from keeping track of all of the tech that was used during the remote learning stages of the early pandemic, and best practices on reviewing the software and devices being used, mapping data, and cybersecurity challenges. With both supply chain concerns and a variety of new software tools being introduced in classrooms, tech teams are finding budgeting to be difficult and have had to do serious reviews of the usage and impact of software compared to its cost.

Other topics discussed included hiring concerns and resources to find creative hiring solutions, as well as how to best advocate to the school’s leadership for new hires in the tech department. Tech leaders had a lot of influence and a more prominent seat at the table at the height of the pandemic when remote learning was the norm. Now other departments, such as communications, seem to have more elevated roles.

Towards the end of the call, participants brought additional questions to the table including suggestions for best project management tools, and tools for COVID tracking with the return of more in-person visitors to schools. They also discussed supply chain concerns when it comes to ordering new devices. Many schools are struggling to get the technology they need when they need it and are having to have proactive conversations with vendors to best plan for delays. Some are getting creative by using TV displays when they cannot obtain SmartBoards in classrooms.

Next month’s Virtual Town Hall will be held on December 15 at 3:00 pm Eastern. It will be a special holiday break edition. Additional upcoming ATLIS events include a summit on December 8 titled: “DEI - Understanding the Conversations''. The ATLIS 2022: Ignited Annual Conference will be held May 1-4 in Orlando, Fl. and the call for presenters is open through Nov. 22.
