AshleyCrossI started my career in education as a first-grade teacher in a large public school district, a suburb of Nashville, where I joined a huge team with eight other first-grade teachers. My colleagues had been working together for a long time, and alliances were hard-set within this close group. While everyone was extremely friendly, I felt isolated in my journey as an educator. I longed to be connected with like-minded peers to share ideas and troubleshoot problems. When I discovered that there was an online network of teachers who were sharing and collaborating with one another, I was hooked! After I developed a blog documenting what I was doing in my classroom, suddenly I had teachers from around the world giving me feedback and encouragement.

I had found my first professional learning network.

Fast forward many years, as I took on many different roles throughout my career. From an Instructional Technology Specialist focusing on PD with high school teachers to becoming an IT Director, it has been an amazing journey! My favorite part of the job is relationships-- it’s never really about the tech.

Along the way, I became a Google Certified Innovator. I helped organize local technology conferences, which led me to work with the Tennessee Department of Education to help plan the state technology conference. While working on my doctorate at Pepperdine University, I took a course on Global Perspectives where we examined countries that had high Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) worldwide rankings; my Pepperdine cadre traveled to Singapore to learn firsthand what the schools were doing to set themselves apart on the international stage. There I discovered the magic of international schools, and I knew I wanted to find a similar work environment. Investigating the independent school world, I transitioned to the Associate Director of Technology at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School.

I attended the very first Early Career and Aspiring Technology Directors Institute (ECATD). It was the best professional development experience of my career, and I felt I had truly found my “tribe” through ATLIS. I also received a promotion at work, gaining valuable experience leading the IT Department. ATLIS (and ECATD) introduced me to an amazing group of individuals across the nation, all with unique insights into how we can lead technology efforts at independent schools. I’ve learned from ATLIS’s numerous customized professional development opportunities, and I’ve grown as a leader by facilitating webinars, designing workshops, and delivering conference presentations.

Now, I’m thrilled to join the ATLIS team to serve as the new Manager of Membership and Member Services. I can’t wait to hear from all of our members about how we can take the amazing organization that is ATLIS to the next level.

For me, it’s all about the connections, the professional learning network. And ATLIS is the best of the best.
